A cult object of design, the Pipistrello lamp was designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965. The lamp used new and innovative techniques for manufacturing methacrylate when originally launched.

Gae Aulenti was one of the foremost design figures in the post-war period in Italy due to her notable work designing portions of the Musée d'Orsay(Paris), Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Palazzo Grassi (Venice), Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (Barcelona) and Asian Art Museum (San Francisco).
In 1950, in Lucca (Tuscany), Elio Martinelli took over the family business specializing in the production of lighting. An innovative industrialist, Martinelli becomes a pioneer in the use of new materials such as acrylic. He himself went on to design a multitude of remarkable 20th century lamps as well as produce iconic works by other deisgners. The company is still family owned and produced 100% in Italy.
