Architect Knud Holscher and the late master cabinetmaker Ejnar Pedersen were close friends. The chair shown here was shaped by both men’s minds and hands as an idea and as a design. In Ejnar’s workshop, the chair was scrutinized and analysed, discussed and adjusted, until they agreed. For the most part, that is, since there would always be room for improvement.

The friendship between Knud Holscher and Ejnar Pedersen goes back many years. This led to many deep conversations about their profession over the years, as well as long trips and a couple of collaborative projects.

The idea for another collaboration emerged back in 2015, when Knud Holscher was 85 and Ejnar Pedersen was 93 years old. Initially, Anders – of A. Petersen – teased the two men with the idea of making one ‘last chair’ together. The two elderly gentlemen wouldn’t hear a word of it, so instead, the chair ended up being called ‘the second-to-last chair’. That left room for one more, at least. Ejnar died in the spring of 2020, after having just turned 97. But before that, he actually managed to deliver a brand-new dining chair to the Danish royal family.

The chair’s frame of painted ash is produced by Getama in northern Jutland, welder Mikkel Kjærholm makes the frame, and the seat/back is woven at Bruun Olsen Flet in Hillerød.
